How to Survive in Icarus Game Where the Wild Planet Bites Back

Updated March 2026 · Dangerous Horizons
Icarus just pulled off something rare. With the Dangerous Horizons expansion, RocketWerkz didn’t just patch the game — they rebuilt the late game from scratch. Tier 5 tech, a ruthless new map, and the first actual NPC-populated hub in the game’s history. This is your complete Icarus Dangerous Horizons guide.

Forget everything you knew about safe landing zones. Elysium throws you into a radioactive desert with zero mercy and zero hand-holding. Solo players, teams, veterans — everyone resets here. That’s what makes it special.

CEO Dean Hall called this expansion content that “comes close to what we would do with a sequel.” That’s not marketing noise. This expansion reshapes the entire Icarus 2026 meta.

Tier 5 Technology: What to Craft First?

The Icarus Tier 5 tech tree runs on oil. That’s the short version. The longer version is a refining chain that demands serious infrastructure investment before you see a single T5 item in your hands.

Understanding the chain is everything. Skip a step and you’re dead in the water — literally, since the Pump Jack needs placement near an oil geyser and can’t be relocated easily.

Priority Crafting Order

Don’t try to rush T5 armor on day one. You’ll burn resources and stall progress. This is the order that actually works:

  • Pump Jack first. Scout oil geysers before building your base camp. Your entire T5 pipeline depends on proximity to one.
  • Crude Oil Refiner second. Raw oil is useless without it. Prioritize this over any weapon crafting.
  • Chainsaw and Jackhammer early. Powered by Refined Oil — they slash resource gathering time dramatically. For solo players especially, these tools carry the mid-game.
  • Lithium tools before Uranium gear. Lithium nodes appear in most biomes. Ruby is cave-locked and rarer — don’t count on it early.
  • Hoverframe last. Incredible for traversal but costs significant refined oil to operate. Get your base fully functional first.

Solo vs. Team: Cost-Benefit Breakdown

The oil infrastructure scales poorly for solo players if you’re not strategic. The Pump Jack setup is a time sink — a two-person team cuts that phase almost in half.

FactorSolo PlayerTeam (2–4)
Oil infrastructureLong — do it before tackling missionsFast — split roles between builder & scout
Uranium processingHigh risk — slow collection in TPS patrol zonesOne player on overwatch while others mine
Ruby extractionNeeds Platinum Pickaxe min — cave fights are brutal soloFeasible with one combat, one mining
T5 armor payoffWorth it — radiation protection is essentialWorth it — especially for world boss phase 2+
HoverframeMassive QoL; lower priorityHigh priority — map is huge, travel is punishing
Solo survival note: On Elysium, the standard Orbital Exchange Interface (OEI) doesn’t work. You need an Advanced OEI to access workshop gear. Bring one in your loadout before you drop — this catches a lot of players off guard.

The Elysium Map Meta

Elysium is not a tutorial zone. There’s no safe biome to ease you in. You land in a bleak desert or frozen tundra — immediate threats, immediate resource scarcity, and a hostile military faction called The People’s Syndicate (TPS) actively hunting you.

The map is divided into four quads — Red, Yellow, Purple, and Blue — each with different terrain and escalating threat density as you push outward from Eden.

The Four Major Biomes

Desert (Red/Yellow Quad)

Starting zone for most drops. Oil geysers concentrated here. Hot, exposed, TPS patrols frequent. Best early source of Lithium.

Tundra (North-East)

Crystallized Ruby caves in grid L7 area. Extreme cold layered on top of radiation. Bring antiradiation tonics AND insulation gear.

Volcanic (Red Quad NW)

High radiation zones. Geothermal lakes provide water — invaluable in a pinch. This is the world boss territory.

Swamp

Dense creature spawns including mutated variants. Slower traversal. Tama and Slinker breeding zones are here.

Navigating Radiation Zones

Radiation is the map’s defining hazard. Unlike storms or cold, it doesn’t announce itself with obvious audio cues until you’re already taking damage. Watch the Geiger counter on your HUD like a hawk.

  • Low Tier Radiation Tonic — crafted early, slowly clears radiation over time. Always carry six minimum.
  • Antiradiation injection (yellow syringe) — stronger fast-clear. Save these for emergencies or boss fights.
  • T5 armor is the long-term solution. The radiation resistance from a full T5 set is the single best reason to rush oil infrastructure.
  • Geothermal lakes in volcanic zones are safe water sources mid-radiation sprint — use them as waypoints when crossing hot zones.
Elysium map secrets tip: Crystallized Ruby can only be mined with a Platinum Pickaxe or higher. Cave L7 in the tundra is the best early source. Mark it on your compass before you need it — the entrance is easy to miss in low visibility.

Eden: The NPC Trading Hub

Eden is the first permanent NPC settlement in Icarus history. Built into a rock formation in the desert quad, it serves as your mission board, trading post, and safe house all in one.

NPC trading missions unlock permanently as you complete Operations. Once a trader arrives in Eden, they stay — so early investment in Operations pays long-term dividends.

  • Culinary Specialist — sells emergency food provisions for Ren. Crucial buffer when your farming isn’t set up yet.
  • NPC Fish Trader — located at a specific coastal point (marked Blue on community maps), not in Eden. Worth the trip for rare blueprint access.
  • Uranium trading — Uranium rods are both a workshop currency and an on-planet crafting resource. Prioritize the NPC trading missions that reward Uranium early.
  • Complete the 12 new Operations across Olympus, Styx, and Prometheus (free Kepler Update) to unlock traders on older maps too.

Icarus Best Weapons 2026 — Tier List

With T5 gear now live, the meta has shifted completely. Laser weapons and Lithium-forged tools have pushed most T3/T4 options into retirement. Here’s where everything lands for Icarus best weapons 2026:

S
Laser Sidearm T5 Lithium Rifle Ruby Blade

Best-in-slot for radiation zones. Laser Sidearm needs zero ammo crafting — a massive solo advantage on Elysium.

A
T4 Compound Bow Platinum Spear T5 Lithium Axe

Still dominant in caves and against early TPS patrols. Compound Bow stays relevant for stealth approaches to NPC settlements.

B
Steel Hunting Rifle Carbide Knife T4 Crossbow

Solid backup weapons. Carbide Knife is the best defensive tool when a mutant closes range unexpectedly in a cave.

Stone Tools (T1) T2 Bone Knife Wooden Bow

Leave these in orbit. Nothing here stops a TPS patrol or a mutated Yeti. Scrap on Elysium.

Note: Mounts also function as combat tools. The Raptor with a developed talent tree out-performs most B-tier weapons in open terrain fights against creatures.

Veteran Secrets — 3 Things Not in the Patch Notes

These come from hours in Elysium, not the official documentation. Each one can save a run.

01
Fixed Drop = Fixed Base Location

All drops on Elysium land at the same OEI point in the desert. Build your first camp immediately east of the drop point, not at Eden. It’s faster to run to Eden than haul resources from it — and you get a private retreat when TPS raids the settlement during missions.

02
Stamina Trick for Radiation Sprints

Eating Cooked Meat right before entering a high-radiation zone gives you a hidden stamina regen buff that lasts ~90 seconds. Sprint the entire crossing without stopping. Pausing to manage stamina mid-zone doubles your radiation exposure time. Eat first, sprint through, recover after.

03
Pump Jack Placement Exploit

You don’t need to be directly on an oil geyser — Pump Jacks have a 4-tile radius. Place yours slightly offset to keep it inside your base perimeter. This lets you wall it in for TPS raid protection without blocking the geyser’s interaction point.
